Grief and Loss Resources for Children and Families

Grief is a difficult topic, and talking about loss is never easy. Many children will experience the death of a family member, friend, or loved one during their school years.

According to Dr. David Schonfeld, Director of the National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement, "Over the course of their school lives, 9 in 10 children will experience the death of a family member or close friend." This means that grieving students are present in nearly every school and classroom.

It is important to remember that everyone experiences grief differently. Some children may express their emotions openly, while others may keep their feelings private. Grief does not always look the same, and even when it is not visible, it is still very real.

A Note for Parents and Caregivers

If your child has experienced a significant loss, trauma, or is struggling with grief, please consider:

  • Reaching out to your child's school counselor, teacher, or campus support staff for guidance and support.
  • Exploring the resources provided below to help your family navigate the grieving process.
  • Creating opportunities for open, age-appropriate conversations about feelings and loss.

You are not alone, and support is available to help your child through this challenging time.
